History of Horseback Riding on Catalina Island
Horses were used in the 1880's for the stagecoach rides between
Avalon and Two Harbors that were
offered to Catalina island visitors by the Banning Brothers.
Cattle ranches on the island also utilized horses.
Horseback riding excursions were later offered by
William Wrigley,Jr. when he established the Catalina Stables.
Today horseback riders gather every year for multiple-day
group horseback riding experiences.

The group leases land from the Catalina Island Company,
they operate a working stable on the island, and they
sponsor the Catalina Island Pony Club.

horsemen. Its mission is to preserve western heritage on
Catalina Island by promoting horsemanship, respect, the spirit of
cowboy camaraderie, and love for the outdoors.

Their events include an annual "Catalina Trek" held the
third Wednesday of September and other group riding events.
