Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART)
70 mile Passenger rail and bicycle-pedestrian pathway and corridor project in Marin and Sonoma counties. The SMART District was established by state legislation in 2002 and the project was funded in part by a 0.25% sales tax increase approved by Marin County and Sonoma County voters in 2008. Phase 1 of the project is a 43 mile segment between Northern Santa Rosa and Downtown San Rafael, expected to open in late 2016. Additional segments will be opened as funding becomes avaialable.
