STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESCRIPTION:
This restored adobe, second oldest in San Joaquin Valley, was
built by Daniel Rhoades, who came to California in 1846 by
overland caravan. Rhoades and his brother, John, were among
organizers of the first expedition that attempted to rescue
the Donner party at Donner Lake. Built in 1856, the adobe has
been continuously occupied since.
LOCATION: About 3 miles north of Lemoore, at 10036 19-1/2 Avenue,
on the southwest corner of State Highway 412 and Lacey Boulevard,
Within the grounds of El Adobe de los Robles Historic Park.

LANDMARK NAME: Kingston
TYPE: Historic Marker describing a Historic Town
STATE LANDMARK ID: 270
STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESCRIPTION:
Founded in 1856 by L. A. Whitmore, who operated the first ferry to cross the
Kings River, Kingston became stopping place for Butterfield stages after
1858. A toll bridge superseded the ferry in 1873. On December 26, 1873,
Tiburcio Vasquez and his bandit gang made a bold raid, robbing the entire village.
LOCATION: About 1.1 miles southwest of Laton,
0.4 miles west of 12 3/4 Avenue, near the intersection
of Kingston Park and Douglas Avenue.

LANDMARK NAME: Mussel Slough Tragedy Site

STATE LANDMARK ID: 245
STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESCRIPTION:
Here on May 11, 1880, during a dispute over land titles between settlers and railroad,
a fight broke out in which seven men-two deputy U.S. marshals and five ranchers
lost their lives. The legal struggle over titles was finally settled by a compromise.
LOCATION: About 1.5 miles southeast of Hardwick,
between Everett Avenue and Elder Avenue,
at 5833 Fourteenth Avenue.
