Phineas Banning was a pioneer in the development of Los Angeles Harbor. He promoted building a railroad from the center of Los Angeles to the Harbor community of Wilmington and he promoted creating a harbor at San Pedro.

Wilmington Transportation Company
Phineas Banning founded the Wilmington Transportation Company in 1884 when the City of Los Angeles was still known as El Pueblo de Los Angeles. The company operated tugboats and fuel barges at the Southern California Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Wilmington Transportation was acquired by Foss Maritime Company of Seattle, the oldest tugboat company operating on Washington State's Puget Sound.

General Phineas Banning Residence Museum
Located at 401 East "M" Street in the Wilmington neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The museum is housed in a 23 room house built on 20 acres in 1864 in the Greek Revival style. Since 1927 The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks has managed the property's buildings and gardens since 1927 and today they manage it along with the Friends of the Banning Museum (formerly the Friends of Banning Park) organization. The property is bounded by Pacific Coast Highway on the north side, by East "M" Street on the south side, and by Eubanks Avenue on the east side and by neighborhood homes on the west side.
