About the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area
An introduction to Mammoth Mountain and the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area
in the Eastern Sierras region of California. Mammoth Mountain is a lava dome complex
formed volcanic eruptions more than 50,000 years ago.
Even though it has not been an active volcano for many
thousands of years, the mountain still produces volcanic gases
in an area near Horseshoe Lake. Mammoth Mountain is most
well-known for being the home of the Mammoth Mountain Resort,
a winter ski area and summer mountain recreation area established
in 1953.
